Hi, can anyone please explain to me the difference between Tex-Mex and Tejano music?
Q. My understanding is that Tejano is a more modern phenomenon mixing various musical styles, while Tex-Mex blends 'Mexican' music with country. Is that right? Also, where does Conjunto come into it? Thanks.
Asked by britage - Sun Jul 12 15:30:49 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Tejano can be in English, but it is usually in Spanish, and usually sang by hispanics born in the United States. Conjunto is to rural Mexico what country music is to the rural United States. It is the kind with the accordion that is often stereotyped with Mexico. It is really popular in the northern desert parts of Mexico, and is often heard along the border.

Q. Why was it difficult for her to make it in Mexico? What is Tejano music?

A. Because she was a woman and men were more dominant in the business. Tejano music is Mexican music from Texas (Tex-Mex) that has roots of German polka. you can find tons of information on her and tejano music on these websites: and watch the selena movie!

How many of you think tejano music is horrible, stupid, and obnoxious.?
Q. Every time a tejano song song comes out i get so embaraced. It so sounds like a total rip off of real Mexican music. and by the way Its spelled Texas is spelled with an "X" not a "J" Reply: Well Te"J"ano music is still Pathetic its the same old boring sad lyrics.. why cant they change it a bit it gets on my nerves. people that listen to that have no good taste in music. Adventure man your a dum dum if texas used to be called Tejas when it was filled with Hispanic influence then why the heck is Mexico spelled with a "X" and why is Oaxaca like that as well as hundreds and thousands of words or places in Mexico. and sorry for posting this on the wrong place i made my point

A. Hate to burst your bubble, Friend, but Texas used to be spelled with a "J" back when it was still a republic with significant Hispanic influence. Culturally and historically, there are still many current applications using the word "Tejano" that are not only accurate, but socially acceptable too. Maybe after a few cold ones, your ear will pick up those aspects of Tejano that others enjoy? For some its an acquired taste, but make no mistake...its foundation is firmly grounded in legitimate culture and history. Vaya en Paz!

Did anyone like Selena, the Tejano music star, and if so, what were your favorite songs by her?
Q. I know that I was saddened by the tragic shooting of Tejano music star Selena. I know that I was only 13 or 14 years old, but her music had a lot of impact on me. I loved her songs, and I thought that she was a wonderful singer. I was wondering if anyone liked her songs as well as I did?

She has a way of finding that lost cd. I am posting her link below and you will find a number where you can either call or email her. I hope this helps.. Good Luck. edit: after 2 cups of coffee I see you were asking about the Satin Jackets! You will have to probably go to a show to purchase them.

A. Try scouting out local establishments that offer live Tejano music. (restaurants, lounges, etc.)... find out the name of local bands, see if you can get a manager's name or number for them... sometimes you just have to put in the "legwork" yourself and let people know you are looking to hire a band. Many up and coming people are eager to build their experience and would welcome the chance to play for a crowd...

Q. Why is it Tejano music radio stations always seem to have stronger signals/reception than mainstream stations?

A. If they are licensed to Mexico, the border stations will run at higher power than what you're accustomed to in the US - especially those lower on the dial. It eneables them to sell advertising in the US at bigger $s than in Mexico. If it's a US station, it's just that you are closer to their transmitter; or the owner is using an especially big signal for an Hispanic station than is customary - and good for him. -a guy named duh

Anybody like Tejano, mariachi, or any Mexican(-American) music?
Q. I live in Bakersfield, CA, which has plenty of Spanish-language stations. So I'm quite familiar w/ Tejano, norteno, cumbias, mariachi, or any Mexican or Mexican-American music. I've also herd of Los Tigres del Norte, Ezequiel Pena, Los Rieleros del Norte, Arkangel R-15, Industria del Amor, Marco Antonio Solis, Los Huracanes del Norte, etc. I also got 2 learn about this music in a Intro to World Music class; there were a few Hispanic students that did presentations on Tejano or ranchera music. Anybody else familiar w/ these types of music or artists? Actually, Dave, the reason y u hear accordions in Tejano music is because one influence was Central European immigrants, such as the Germans, Polish & Czech, that helped shape Tejano music.

How can music be related with Criminal Justice?
Q. I have to write a paper for my American Roots Music class, which is about the history, culture and impact of music has had in America such as blues, gospel, jazz, country, rock n roll, tejano, etc. I have to relate music to my major which is Criminal Justice. I know some characteristics of music are its a discipline, its skill based, requires, performance, creative expression, writing, value identification, and etc. Any ideas on how to incorporate those or anything else about music to Criminal Justice? Its a one paged single spaced paper but its kind of difficult coming up with something for majors not related to music whatsoever.

A. I can think of two possibilities. 1) Prison-themed or prison-inspired folk or country music. Everyone from Leadbelly to Johnny Cash. 2) The role and history of concert performances in prisons, how they affect prison discipline, reform, etc.

A. In my area the 3 row button accordions are the most popular. The preferred key is EAD, but GCF and ADG are also used. The key used seems mostly to depend on what the singers like. 48 bass piano accordions are sometimes seen too, but not as common as the three rows.
