A snake (anaconda).
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Snakes are elongate legless carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes that can be distinguished from legless lizards by their lack of eyelids and external ears. Like all squamates, snakes are ectothermic amniote vertebrates covered in overlapping scales. Many species of snakes have skulls with many more joints than their lizard ancestors, enabling them to swallow prey much larger than their heads with their highly mobile jaws. In order to accommodate their narrow bodies, snakes' paired organs (such as kidneys) appear one in front of the other instead of side by side, and most have only one functional lung. Some species retain a pelvic girdle with a pair of vestigial claws on either side of the cloaca. Living snakes are found on every continent except Antarctica and most islands. Fifteen families are currently recognized comprising 456 genera and over 2,900 species. They range in size from the tiny, 10 cm long thread snake to pythons and anacondas of up to 7.6 metres (25 ft) in length. The recently discovered fossil Titanoboa was 15 metres (49 ft) long. Snakes are thought to have evolved from either burrowing or aquatic lizards during the Cretaceous period (c 150 Ma). The diversity of modern snakes appeared during the Paleocene period (c 66 to 56 Ma). Most species are non-venomous and those that have venom use it primarily to kill and subdue prey rather than for self-defense. Some possess venom potent enough to cause painful injury or death to humans. Those which are non-venomous either swallow prey alive or kill it via constriction. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I have never owned a snake or any other reptile before and I am definatly getting one but I don't know which one to get. I am really fascinated in them and I love to observe their behaviors. I want a good beginner snake that will be very rewarding to own. I don't want a Ball Python, Corn Snake, or Garter Snake though. Can somebody please help me out? Hello; great question. :) Here is a list of my top 10 favorite snakes for beginners, along with why I chose them, and a care sheet on each species. While both Corn snakes and Ball pythons are on this list; but I made sure to include eight other species that aren't quite as commonly seen. :) 1. Rosy boa. They are small, very docile, calm, are great eaters, and are slow moving (and thus easier to handle than a lot of colubrids like King snakes and Corn snakes). They are also very hardy, low maintenance, come in lots of different colors and localities, and aren't prone to shedding problems. Care sheet: 2. Kenyan sand boa. They have all of the good qualities of the Rosy like the gentle disposition, ease of care, small size, great… [cont.] Answered by Melissa B - Fri Jun 13 21:19:30 2008 What kind of snake is black with two yellow stripes going down it's back? Q. I saw a snake with a group of friends that was black and it had two yellow stripes going from it's head to it's tail. They told me it was a garden snake, but I've heard that garden snakes are only green. Can someone please tell me what type of snake this is? Thank you! Answered by Lisa A - Fri May 22 23:45:58 2009 How do I keep a snake tank temperature regulated?
Q. I am unsure how to regulate the temperature in my snake tank. I have been told that I need to keep one side warmer than the other but I can't seem to do so. I have a ten gallon tank for a young snake and I keep the light concentrated on the side opposite of the water dish. I have a thermometer on either side but they always read pretty much the same. Also, how long should I be keeping the light on for? Asked by TenFour20 - Tue Jul 3 17:30:56 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Repti-therms Just check them to see that they are not getting too hot. Basically, if you cannot hold your hand on the heater it is too hot. For safety I usually put newspaper down under the bark chips or aspen bedding. This dissipates the heat so as not to burn your snake. Many times snakes aren't bright enough to realize they are getting burnt and will stay on the hot area until much damage has occurred. The heat tapes as far as I know don't get as hot as the Repti-therms. You can buy the heat tape in strips that are 3" or 11" wide and as long as you want. This is ideal when more than one tank is going to be heated. In any case your snake needs a temperature variant. Place the heating pad at one end of the tank not in the center.… [cont.] Answered by AnimalManiac - Sat Jul 7 05:48:09 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "snake" |
