The name of the city is often shortened to Salt Lake or SLC. Salt Lake City has a population of 181,698 as of July 1, 2008, making it the 126th largest city in the United States. The Salt Lake City metropolitan area spans Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties, and has a total estimated population of 1,115,692 as of July 1, 2008. Salt Lake City is further situated in a larger urban area known as the Wasatch Front and is part of the Salt Lake City-Ogden-Clearfield CSA that has an estimated population of 1,717,261. The total estimated population of the Wasatch Front (Salt Lake CSA and Provo MSA) is 2,196,755 as of July 1, 2008. The city was founded in 1847 as Great Salt Lake City by a group of Mormon pioneers led by their prophet, Brigham Young, who left behind hostility and violence in the Midwestern United States. They extensively irrigated and cultivated the arid valley and faced persecution from the U.S. government for their practice of polygamy, which was officially discontinued in 1890. Today, Salt Lake City is still home to the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS, also known as the Mormon Church). According to data from the LDS Church, the State of Utah, combined with IRS and Census Bureau estimates, Salt Lake County was 37% LDS in 2004, as reported in The Salt Lake Tribune. Mining booms and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad initially brought economic growth, and the city was nicknamed the Crossroads of the West. Salt Lake City has since developed a strong outdoor recreation tourist industry based primarily on skiing. I have packages that are supposed to go to a city outside of Salt Lake and it's been said that it's been delivered to Salt Lake. Asked by Visser V - Sun Oct 26 21:25:58 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. You can do it pretty easy. I have stayed at the Days Inn in Midvale and rode the bus up to Snowbird. The hotel offered a "Superpass" that included Tram and Public transit. Make sure to download a copy of the bus schedule. I never had any trouble in the morning, but I did have to wait a few times coming down at the end of the day. This particular Days Inn was right by a TRAX station too, so running downtown at night was not a problem. I had a shuttle from the airport, I think it cost me $30 round trip. There are of course other hotel options in Sandy as well. Good Luck, have fun! Q. I wanted to know if Salt Lake City/Park City was as dry of a climate as Denver/Silverthorn Area is? Also, if it is easy to get to the slopes from Salt Lake City drive-wise and if Salt Lake City is a nice place to live? Is it difficult to breath like in Colorado Springs,Colorado? I know it was hard to breath in the dry,mile high air and all my joints hurt. I am considering moving out there but wanted to know if it was worth it. Everyone makes such a big deal out of our snow but there are better ski areas with much more snow in utah and montana. This year the base depth in a ski area in virginia is higher than the base depth in silverthorn. Utah is wetter snowier and colder, so ski there!
