Pronunciation refers to the way a word or a language is spoken, or the manner in which someone utters a word. If someone is said to have "correct pronunciation," then it refers to both within a particular dialect.

A word can be spoken in different ways by various individuals or groups, depending on many factors, such as: the area in which they grew up, the area in which they now live, if they have a speech or voice disorder, their ethnic group, their social class, or their education. There is however a correct pronunciation for every word, for example "baroque" can be pronounced "barohk" or "barock" but the correct pronunciation is the latter of the two.

Linguistic terminology

Syllables are counted as units of sound (phones) that they use in their language. The branch of linguistics which studies these units of sound is phonetics. Phones which play the same role are grouped together into classes called phonemes; the study of these is phonemics or phonematics or phonology. Phones as components of articulation are usually described using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

Salmon A. (sah-mahn) or B. (Sahl-mohn) 2. Pecan A. (Pea-cohn) or B. (Pea-cahn) 3. Caramel A. (Cahr-ah-mehl) or B. (Care-ah-mehl) Thanks! You can just list the numbers and A or B as your answer. How is the name Shannon pronounced in Spanish?
Q. Would it be pronounced any differently than how it sounds in English?
Asked by Becca 17 - Sat May 23 13:49:26 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The sound "Sh" does not exist in standard Spanish, so people who have never learned to pronounce it would say either "Sa-non" or "Cha-non". (The last syllable would be given the full "o" sound and would rhyme with either "gone" or "gong", depending on the speaker and where they were from, and not the "muttered" sound we English speakers tend to give it).

In what British dialect is saw pronounced sawr?
Q. I just watched Merlin and I noticed that Bradley James (Prince Arthur) pronounced the word saw as 'sawr'. I've never noticed this before and I was wondering where this pronounciation comes from. Is it a regional or a class thing?

A. It happens in most British dialects when a word ending in w precedes a word beginning with a vowel sound; it even happens in "Received Pronunciation" and "BBC English" though it is, strictly speaking, frowned upon.
