Dallas (pronounced /ˈdæləs/), with a population of 1,279,910, is the third-largest city in Texas and the 8th-largest in the United States. The city is the main economic center of the 12-county Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex that according to the March 2009 U.S. Census Bureau release, had a population of 6,300,006 as of July 2008. The Dallas/Ft. Worth area is the fourth largest and number one fastest-growing (by population) metropolitan area in the United States.

Dallas is rated as a beta world city by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group & Network.

Founded in 1841 and formally incorporated as a city in February, 1856, the city's economy is primarily based on banking, commerce, telecommunications, computer technology, energy, and transportation; only New York City and Houston are home to more Fortune 500 headquarters in the city limits. Located in North Texas and a major city in the American South/Southwest, Dallas is the core of the largest inland metropolitan area in the United States that lacks any navigable link to the sea. The city's prominence despite this comes from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, its position along numerous railroad lines, a strong industrial and financial sector, and its status as a major inland port (due largely to the presence of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, one of the largest and busiest in the world).

Is there anywhere in the Dallas area where they will buy glass to recycle?
Q. I've only been able to find cash for cans and I have a lot of bottles that I just throw away at work. Is there any place in Dallas that will give cash for bottles or any other goods besides cans? Thanks.

A. You're supposed to just give it to recycle because its the right thing to do. They need the money to stay in business.

What is the cost of living difference between Dallas and Basel, Switzerland?
Q. My wife and I are considering making a move from Dallas to Basel. I realize that living abroad as a US citizen will likely be more expensive, but wanted to know what type of differential there actually is. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A. im not really familiar with the tax system in switzerland. i know it's higher than texas but there are also loads of benefits. standard of living (food, transportation, accommodation, etc) is also dear. but i think that will be compensated with a higher salary. basel is a university town so there will always be places for cheaper necessities. and yes, it is a beautiful place

What area in the Dallas/Ft.Worth Metroplex is overwhelmingly populated by the White working poor?
Q. Please believe me, i am not floating a racist or bigoted question here. I am merely collecting random data about perceptions of socio-economic attitudes regarding the different neighbourhoods within the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I am especially interested in researching an area of that region which is predominantly White with higher than average levels of poverty and low levels of educational attainment. Thanks. Granny Turtle you spent an awful long time to tell us nothing. BTW, "educational attainment" is a term which means to what grade or degree a person was formally educated,. It has nothing to do with the quality of schools in the local school district. Regarding the rest of your long answer, I kindly ask you re-read my ENTIRE… [cont.]
