Dallas (pronounced /ˈdæləs/) is the third-largest city in Texas and the ninth-largest in the United States. As of 2009, the population of Dallas was at 1.3 million according to the US Census Bureau. The city is the largest economic center of the 12-county Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area that according to the March 2010 U.S. Census Bureau release, had a population of roughly 6.5 million as of July 2009. The metropolitan area is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Founded in 1841 and formally incorporated as a city in February, 1856, the city's economy is primarily based on banking, commerce, telecommunications, computer technology, energy, and transportation, home to several Fortune 500 companies. Located in North Texas and a major city in the American South, Dallas is the core of the largest inland metropolitan area in the United States that lacks any navigable link to the sea. The city's prominence arose from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, its position along numerous railroad lines, a strong industrial and financial sector, and its status as a major inland port (due largely to the presence of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, one of the largest and busiest in the world). It was rated as a beta world city by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group & Network.

What was the original purpose of the abandoned road in Dallas that is east of Junior Drive?
Q. In the Kessler Park section of Dallas, at the place where Junior Drive makes an abrupt right hand turn and heads south instead of continuing east, there's a concrete road, blocked off by wooden posts. It runs for about a half a block, in an area that, even though it is very near downtown Dallas, is still largely unused, vacant and lonely land. It looks like it was originally an extension of Junior Drive, following Coombs Creek to the east. It's been blocked off like this for at least 42 years. What was its original purpose?

A. Without going out there and looking closely (I live in HEB), just going by the map, I"d say the land is probably unstable due to being so close to the river and thus is probably considered flood land.

What can we do to make Dallas a hot tourist place like other cities?
Q. Dallas is a great place to live, but why is Houston more popular when it comes to tourist attractions and San Antionio. What can we do to make it the IT place to be. We don't have many famous people come here either. Other cities have more concerts and shows than we do. I want the city of Dallas to get our town on the REAL map! Anyone else think this? What can we do? Thanks!

A. I am Canadian and my and my friends went through Dallas on our way too and from Austin then we went to San Antonio and Corpus Christi. San Antonio of course has the Alamo, the River Walk and Fiesta Texas. Plus they have really built up the tourist feel and make it a fun convient destination. Austin was also quite lively and interesting. Dallas was so big and confusing. We stopped on out way back to Canada to see the spot where JFK was killed. It took us forever to find it and it wasn't marked when we drove by the first time which got us stuck again on the freeway and took us 20 minutes to get back. Once we stopped we went there and found no one to really explain much except for some old people selling papers. I know that it isn't a… [cont.]
