Q. I just had my first two ballroom dance lessons- the rumba and the waltz. It seems that the steps for the box step are the same for both. I understand the music and styling is different- but the basic box step seems the same in my memory. Can this possibly be correct or am I missing something? Asked by Rita G - Wed Feb 4 11:28:53 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are definite similarities to the two steps. The differences will be: The timing in the steps, in the Rumba the forward and backward steps take two beats of music each, while the side and close steps will take one beat of music each. In the Waltz all of the steps have one beat value. The dragging of the feet, In the Rumba the toes drag all of the time, and in the Waltz the forward and side steps are above the floor, but the close steps will be dragging of the feet. The side step, in Rumba I always teach that the side step is an arc that starts like you are going to close your feet, and then arcs to the side. Q. Played properly, the beats of the 1-2-3 rhythm of Viennese waltzes--such as those composed by members of the Strauss family--sound a little bit "off". Is there a pattern to the "off-ness?" Asked by j48t - Wed Apr 8 19:38:57 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have a Viennese salon orchestra (usually 5-7 players),and we play for balls around the NYC area (yes, there are ethnic groups that still hold Viennese balls!) The term you seek is "luftpause" - a hesitation that, as you say, give waltzes their flavor, and not a straight 1 2 3. Much of the use of this is passed down aurally - there is really no way to notate it. And it is NOT used all the time - BORING! The various holds, and tempos changes are also traditional - when you hear and play enough of this, you get the style, as you do with ANY kind of music. We have about 300 titles in our Viennese library, but maybe fifty of them get the most play. You can listen to some CDs of salon orchestras from Europe playing them - or listen to the… [cont.] Answered by mamianka - Wed Apr 8 20:34:49 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Waltz" |
