The Caribbean island of Cuba has developed a wide range of creolized musical styles, based on its cultural origins in Europe and Africa. Since the nineteenth century its music has been hugely popular and influential throughout the world. It has been perhaps the most popular form of world music since the introduction of recording technology. The music of Cuba, including the instruments and the dances, is mostly of European (Spanish) and African origin. Most forms of the present day are creolized fusions and mixtures of these two great sources. Almost nothing remains of the original Indian traditions, except in some of the place names, such as Guanabacoa. Maracas are probably native in origin. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I heard some pieces of music, apparently from Cuba and other latinamerican countries, and it reminds me of all those influences... I love it, it's very relaxing , the rhythm is "mesmerizing" and the melodies are sweet... Can you tell me a bit about it, and maybe advise me some works and artists? Thanks Asked by Allan D, exterminator of trolls - Wed Apr 15 06:36:39 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Bolero is a rhythm with Spanish roots (Spanish as in Spaniard) which has been reinvented in some Caribbean countries as Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and others. As far as i know, its roots come from the Contradanza, and some rhythmic elements as the Cuban Danzon. But going back to its original roots, it comes from the Gypsy music from Spain, deriving its name from the word "volar" which means to fly. The movements in the Gypsy dances sometimes resemble the flying bird's rapid wing movements. After its arrival in America, it continued evolving to Danzon and Cha Cha Cha. What are some similarities of Cuba vs Puerto rico and differences including music cultural genres etc ? Asked by simplysexy - Mon Mar 23 12:46:13 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The ethnic groups of Cuba and PR are very similar to each other. English is one of the main languages of PR, while Cuba speaks their own dialect of Spanish. The PR is predominately Catholic, while Cuba is officially atheist. Unlike in Russia, however, the Cuban government never really went after churches, so the majority of Cubans do practice one faith or another.
