From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Jazz is a music genre that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions. From its early development until the present, jazz has incorporated music from 19th and 20th century American popular music. Its West African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and the swung note. However, Art Blakey has been quoted as saying, "No America, no jazz. I’ve seen people try to connect it to other countries, for instance to Africa, but it doesn’t have a damn thing to do with Africa". The word "jazz" (in early years also spelled "jass") began as a West Coast slang term and was first used to refer to music in Chicago in about 1915. From its beginnings in the early 20th century jazz has spawned a variety of subgenres: New Orleans Dixieland dating from the early 1910s, big band-style swing from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s, a variety of Latin jazz fusions such as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz, free jazz from the 1950s and 1960s, jazz fusion from the 1970s, acid jazz from the 1980s (which added funk and hip-hop influences), and Nujazz in the 1990s. As the music has spread around the world it has drawn on local national and regional musical cultures, its aesthetics being adapted to its varied environments and giving rise to many distinctive styles. I am customizing a guitar with a lot of different tones, but the most important one is the jazz neck pickup - I want that mellow, chimey, bell-like jazz guitar sound, primarily for solo jazz. I am currently using a dearmond jazz pickup in the neck, and it sounds pretty darn good. I am wondering if Gibson Classic 57's or another jazz pickup would work even better. Eager to hear thoughts and/or suggestions. Asked by JoeT - Sun Aug 9 23:00:49 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments A. Oooo, "if it ain't, broke don't fix it..." Changing out a pickup isn't too time consuming, but you'll have to buy the thing first. And no matter how much information you collect, you won't know what it really sounds like till it's in your guitar and run through your setup. And anyway, once you have a "jazz guitar" and a "jazz pickup," the only thing left to make that hardcore smooth jazz tone (which I think is what you're describing) is to get a "jazz amp." An old school tube amp would do the trick, for sure. Oh man, though, I just realized, if you're dead set on switching out pickups, consider a P-90, too. For mellow, chimey, and (once the tone's rolled off) bell like, that would do the trick. But then, "talking about music is like… [cont.] Answered by Woodward - Tue Aug 11 22:27:02 2009 How can I jazz up brown basmati rice? Q. Brown basmati rice is one of the main grain staples in my diet. I rarely it it as a side dish- usually it's got something spooned on top of it, like stewed vegetables or a lentil daal. I already cook it in vegetable broth instead of water, but I'd like some more EASY ways to jazz up the flavour while keeping it "universal". Do you have any suggestions? PS I'm a vegetarian. If you are eating the rice with a tomato based dish, add fresh basil. If you are making the rice with a vegetable dish, add savory. Fish, dill. Pork, cilantro (my fave). Or, you can add fresh diced vegetables to the dish. Answered by SexyTrojan - Wed Feb 7 19:17:54 2007 How can I learn to play jazz guitar?
