Alice is a city in and the county seat of Jim Wells County, Texas, United States, in the South Texas region of the state. The population was 19,010 at the 2000 census. Alice was established in 1888. First it was called Bandana, then Kleberg and finally Alice after Alice Gertrudis King Kleberg, the daughter of Richard King, who established the King Ranch. HistoryThe City of Alice was incorporated in 1888 and was known for its large cattle industry until the discovery of oil and petroleum beneath Alice in the 1940s which caused a slight population boom. Alice is also known for an incident in 1948 involving Lyndon B. Johnson's bid for the U.S. Senate. At Alice's Precinct 13, some 202 ballots were cast in alphabetical order and all just at the close of polling. Johnson won the election by 87 votes. From Wikipedia under the
